I would like to also add to the dining guide above, Cafe Azucar which for us is probably the best restaurant where we ate during our stay in Costa Rica.
We went there for Christmas and that was amazing.
The restaurant is not in Montezuma but in Cobano, about 10kms away. [...] The Christmas menu looks delicious and it was just amazing. My husband has a massive beefsteak cooked at perfection with Portobello mushroom, gorgonzola & red wine sauce and gratin dauphinois. I had a mahi mahi in a spicy chile sauce with aubergine caviar and couscous. The dessert was even more amazing, with chocolate and almond cake with homemade coffee ice cream and a panna cotta with plums marinated in rum.
[...]We found out talking to the owners that the chef was trained in London (where we lived!!!) at Boisdale of Belgravia which is a very very good restaurant. This French & Cuban couple decided to run away from Europe to open their own restaurant and have a different way of living.
The restaurant had regular customers since only locals and very few tourists notice this hidden gem which is a shame because these people are really making an effort to please their clients and do not ripe them off as it is the case in Montezuma or Santa Teresa.
Cafe Azucar is in the blue building on the road to Montezuma. More...

[...] I recommend to visit Manzanillo which is a very nice and peaceful beach where you can swim. The best way to go there is inland via Cobano - Rio Negro and then you can come back via Sta Teresa [...]. Eat in Cafe Azucar (behind the bank) in Cobano, the food is fresh and good and the place very different from other places in the area. More...

The town of Cobano is only 10 minutes away and has all your banking and shopping needs. Make sure you visit Cafe Azucar, the only air-conditioned restaurant in town, for delicious food with a Cuban flair. If you want a taste of jungle wild-life, yet still be near civilization, this could be your slice of paradise! More...

Certainly you'll have to pass by Cobano during your stay at Montezuma because that's where the only bank is. Cobano is awful but we discovered a great and cheaper than Montezuma place to have a godd cup of coffee and a delicious sandwich. The place itself is unique because it is very stylish with photos of people from Havana, the owner is Cuban. It is air/conditioned and very fresh and clean.
We had a madness type of club sandwich called the Club Tico and that's worth a try. Otherwise we saw that at another table they had fish very well displayed, almost like a work of art and the dessert was something, strawberries with Chantilly and homemade shortbread. More...

The big blue building has new inhabitants Morgane Pommier and Norbis Alvarez Cordova and thery are bringing to Cobano some fresh new recipes!
Café Azucar’s atmosphere is fresh and clean. The service delightfully friendly. This particular evening Morgane & Norbis were serving two specials. Chicken or fish? But not just your average fare! The chicken, roasted with a hint of rosemary. Stuffed with vegetables and topped with spiced fruit nestled over potatoes. As a gringa I was reminded of Thanksgiving as this was the perfect marriage of sweet and savoury dancing on my taste buds.
The fish, seared tuna over potatoes with cracked pepper and fresh lemon. Let me just say the presentation would impress any artist. Delivered to our table as a piping hot work of art.
Full? That’s too bad because the desserts are delish! We tried banana bread with the homemade ice cream (a la mode) and some strawberry madness to die for.
It is clear Norbis is passionate about cuisine so if you enjoy food it is my recommendation you give CAFÉ AZUCAR a try. I was not disappointed in the least. With a little lick and a lot of skill I wish them success.
